OXALÁ - LABORATORY OF THE FUTURE

Perhaps by contrast, there is no better place than the village of Casa Branca to think about the Future: in the Alentejo there is time for everything, even to imagine what we can expect from the latest technological innovations and their consequences at all levels: cultural, political, environmental, economic, social, human. To foresee problems, manage expectations, discuss directions, imagine scenarios and perhaps try to fit the Future – which may be inconceivable, incomprehensible, overwhelming – with the present and the past. Thus, discussions about transhumanism or artificial intelligence, for example, could flourish in a space where sheep are herded as they were five thousand years ago.

We are on the threshold of the most radical historical revolution — including the possibility of extinction — and it is urgent to think about the strengths and dangers that we may face. But with consideration and the calm necessary for critical thinking, or as the old, prescient adage goes: festina lente.
